My Discovery of the PegasosIIby DoctorMorbius_FP |

IntroductionI use Amiga computers since 1987: they soon became my preferred computer platform and still are today. In the last ten years I have created a highly customized work environment on my Amiga4000/060/PPC. So, when I received my PegasosII-G4 at the beginning of January, I soon realized that I had to face a hard task. I wanted to recreate at least in part my familiar and comfortable work environment, taking full advantage of the evolution provided by the most modern OS and hardware. On the other hand, a few critical utilities and a number of application programs did not run at all, or did not work as expected in certain situations. I was forced to run a hard way, trying to solve problems and find software compromises, but at last I succeeded and my PegasosII now works almost perfectly as I wish. Surely my computer setup can be considered neither the most popular nor a standard environment. And most people that already own a Pegasos know very well the problems that arise during its use. In fact, the main target of this paper are all the persons that still expect to receive their PegasosII, and those that are doubtful and remain in standby state just to see what happens... Well, you can now gain a deeper understanding of the PegasosII before you have this machine in your hands. Actually, I think that the knowledge of my experiences can be useful for future PegasosII owners, helping them to solve several problems in advance. And I also hope that this article can provide useful information to a (hopefully large) number of possible new users, helping them to clarify their ideas and remove uncertainty. Therefore, the article you are now reading is a mixture: a review of PegasosII and MorphOS (with major emphasis on all things not yet discussed by others), a report concerning my discovery of the system and its properties/idiosyncrasies, a description of my increasing satisfaction when I slowly succeeded in the domestication of this powerful beast. I hope you enjoy... |
