Games
Fortis
game for MorphOS has been finished and released. It is old school shooter wrapped in flashy 3D art and FX. More details about the Fortis for MorphOS, screenshots and video-trailer (see on YouTube or download AVI/XviD) available on Encore Games website.

As we promised, price of the Fortis for MorphOS has been very reduced. Everyone can download the <strong>final FULL version</strong> of the game from Encore Games website and use it without any limitations. However if you would like to legally own it you need to either buy full version of the Fortis for iPhone, iPod touch (or iPad in future) on AppStore or recommend the game to another user of iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. Please inform us once you do it, so we could update our statistics.

The game is great. My top score is over 62 000 points for now (btw. ability to upload top score to some server + top ten ranking would add to the playability).

I've noticed some a bit strange text on the webpage under "Purchasing the game" title. One can go to conclusion, that downloading the game is illegal. I guess this unfortunate statement is only caused by imprecise English knowledge. If I do not own iPhone/iPad, and know none of their users (yes, strange, but true), I'm not able to use the game legally. Even if I would like to pay for it via PayPal, even more than AppStore price, why the hell not. I guess this text needs some reformulation. Making a software free and available for download and making its usage illegal at the same time is selfcontradicting.

You are legal user of Fortis because you helped us create the simple game. :-) However if you wanted you could write about Fortis on Twitter. I am sure that more than one iPhone/iPod user follows your profile.

Prob'ly just one of these guys that love to be constantly told: "Come on, that's not right, the gameplay actually is fantastic, I love the game".

And I would gladly repeat that overoptimistic line if only I could try Fortis (I won't until next week, no MorphOS-capable machine at hand ATM).

Why do you say that?!

Because I was plaing the game, I read comments and reviews of iPhone/iPod version. :-) Graphics is good. It isn't strange because graphicsians were environments artists in big gamedev (PS2, PS3, XBox, XBox360, PC, GameCube): Bioshock 2, Ice Age 2, Robots, Beijing, Dark Sector, Batman Begins, Lego Indiana Jones. Unfortunately good graphics isn't good gameplay. However gameplay in Fortis isn't 1/10. I have already bought and played games with worse gameplay. :-)

I promise that our the third project (the second won't be available on devices without multitouch) will be better.

Just installed Fortis into my arcade cabinet.!

Thanks for adding flexible key settings, now the Efika is driving the game machine. :)

White, black, yellow and green are configured as weapon select, while red is fire/menu select and blue for cancel. The stick is used for movement.

Sorry for the bad second image. Its hard to get a close up as the reflection in the glass is reflecting very badly and the camera cannot work in the dark :)

My congratulations. I only can say, I'm dividing my free time between Fortis and MorphOS development, so reaching 90 000 will take some time :-).

Aaaaaahhhh. DS=DualScreen. :) No, it isn't our target. Fortis has already been ported to Windows, and probably will be ported to MacOSX. I am thinking about AROS, Linux and AmigaOS4. But not now yet.

Next projects (in future) probably will be ported to Android too. However I have to port my mni-engine to Java. It isn't easy and funny. :) I prefer native languages (C++, Objective-C) and I hate garbage collector. :)

The gameplay is good enough for what it is... a first project of this kind. One thing I noticed is that I am a guy who loves a controller, using the keyboard I tend to fumble, the mouse control I think is better for me I just have to get used to it... My 8 year old son on the otherhand, has only had one sitting and easily quadrupled my score. LOL!!! Great Job, I look forward to your future endeavors.

Actually, you can have independent libraries as native C or C++ code for quite some time now, it's just the Android-interfacing parts that have to be Java.

I would certainly support an effort originating from MorphOS on Android (atleast when Google decides to enable the non-free store in Norway). ;)

Thanks for cool little game! Too bad I don't have any of those iThings, nor know anyone to recommend...

But the game is nice and smooth on 1600x1200 :) I'd like to get joystick support for it too... I might be too lazy to config Poseidon for that ;)

Just tried the game. It's simple and fun... well, as soon as I learned not to control the ship using mouse ;). My best result is here. Well, sure roshmyr's best is outta my league for a while, but still - to be better than Krashan does mean something to me :)

EDIT: Ha, now I beat even roshmyr himself!

Well, actually I think your record got broken on the geit@home meeting #2 last weekend, playing on my arcade machine (code name x1000).

I need to take a photo ot the hiscore tomorrow, but AFAIR its around 97000 points.

You need to see him playing live. Its awesome :)

[EDIT]
Ok, I was wrong. :)

Here the official geit@home x1000 Fortis hiscore list.

koszer, roschmyr:
Amazing high scores! Congratulation! I can't believe...

koszer:
Do you play on window? Strange. :)

BTW, I am preparing version 1.1 of Fortis with small changes:

  • Last entered nicknames (for each profile separately) is stored and used as default when you enter a new nickname.

  • Changes in French texts.

  • Small changes of registration rules for MorphOS version.

  • Hiding close application button when on-screen keyboard is showed.

  • Sync C++ sources with Objective-C (lots of changes after adding support of iPhone4 and iPad).

  • Changes in many parts of the engine of the game, which do not affect the look and feel of the game.

  • If a player doesn't have enough money for buy something, the shop between levels is hidden.

  • Fast double back key turns back the hero ship.

  • Fixed occasional error with wrong rotation of the hero ship after a collision.

Oh, that's really nothing. Just some practice and everyone could do that... By the way, I've got another highscore... :)

Window, screen - doesn't really matter. It's easier to make a screenshot with SGrab when running in window mode.

you have to wait for a new score from me, it is still to hot here

    @MDW

only some levels are really hard to play, most of the others i can play blindly ;)

Finally, I got some spate time to play Fortis last friday. As expected, is nice little very polished game. Really good.

Do you guys also suffer from general slowdown and audio "growling", due to CPU overload, in the menus? The game plays well on my Pegasos I (april 2), it's the menus that bog down. I suffer those symptoms on other games and demos, so I fear my AHI configuration draws too much CPU. That configuration is untouched from stock setup.

Is there some advice on AHI tuning I should follow?

    @jcmarcos:
You are the second Peg1 user which has similar problem. It isn't only Fortis-problem (VGPII has he same problem). However we are investigating problem. I would inform you if we found the solution. Thank you for information.

The same situation on my pegI. Could you check VGPII? Do you have also problem with sound in this game?

I try reinstall MorphOS on clear partition with only powerSDL libraries adds. It didn't help. Maybe something in my system have too high priority, but I don't know what...

Oh, now I remember - I had also the same situation with sound when I used flyingpigd blanker together with playing mp3...

You have really finished Fortis. Amazing! :) I thought that the game is too hard. Especially third stage. I have not heard anyone finished the game so you are probably first player which finished the game without (I hope) any tricks. Congratulation! I hope that our next game will have online global high scores and best results (like this one) will be stored.

Yep, I confirm. I call it Krashan's strategy (he once mentioned using only rockets) and that's the way to go. By the way, here is one of my early records, and here comes the last one (I especially enjoy that one - 8 lives - yeah!) to confirm I've completed the game several times already. Amazing that Roshmyr gained 100k without completing the game - this is something, man.

Have you finished last level in last stage? Is it game state of finished game? So I noticed stupid mini-bug. :) There are: "stage 4, level 1" (the game contains only 3 stages). I have to change the text if last level are finished. Thank you for the screenshot. I will change it in version 1.1. :)
